IF you were in Valkyrie club on Tuesday and saw a number of females below 21, it was because of the ABS-CBN Summer Trade Event. Invited were members of the advertising community to witness the launch of upcoming ABS-CBN shows, such as On The Wings of Love, The Voice Kids 2 and the remake of Pangako Sa ’Yo.
Pangako Sa ’Yo stars Kathryn Bernardo, Angelica Panganiban, Jodi Santa Maria, Ian Veneracion and Daniel Padilla—the main reason the young females were dressed in their most colorful that night, hoping that the young actor would notice them.
For those who aren’t familiar with the show, Pangako Sa ’Yo was a huge soap back in the early 2000s that shook the landscape of Philippine television. It lorded over the ratings for years and made stars out of Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hemorsa, while transforming character actresses Eula Valdes and Jean Garcia into pop culture icons. It also became the first-ever Pinoy series to conquer and make waves around the world, gaining huge popularity in more than 20 countries, including China, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. Cambodian Television Network even bought its rights from ABS-CBN in 2012 to create a localized version.
In this remake of Pangako Sa ’Yo, which premieres on Monday on prime time on ABS-CBN, the story revolves around the promise made to each other by a cook named Amor (Jodi) and a young man who grew up in a wealthy family named Eduardo (Ian Veneracion). Because of his family’s disapproval of their relationship, Eduardo is forced to leave the woman he loves the most and marry the woman his mother has chosen for him, Claudia (Angelica).
After many years, fate and love will test Eduardo and Claudia’s son Angelo (Daniel) as he faces the same fate as his father when he meets and falls in love with a simple young woman named Yna (Kathryn). How will a vow change the lives of Eduardo, Amor, Claudia, Angelo and Yna? Will their hearts fall out of love because of each other’s broken promises?
Pangako Sa ’Yo is under the production of Star Creatives, the group that created top-caliber dramas, such as Maging Sino Ka Man, Magkaribal, Lobo, Imortal, Princess and I, Got to Believe, Bridges of Love and Forevermore. The program is helmed by Rory Quintos, Dado Lumibao, and Olivia Lamasan.
Anyway, back to the trade event. When the program was introduced and the cast were onstage to invite advertisers to support the show, chaos almost ensued. The young women barged to the front of the dance floor near the stage area, seemingly ready to pounce on Daniel with the hopes of conquering him.
But when these feisty females were just a few feet from the stage where Daniel was smiling ear to ear, obviously happy with the enthusiastic reception that the advertisers were giving him and the cast, they stopped on their tracks. They just stood there basking in the glory that is Daniel Padilla.
I can just imagine what was running in their minds: “Here is the Daniel Padilla we have followed religiously from his TV shows, such as Princess and I and Got to Believe, and his movies She’s Dating The Gangster and Crazy Beautiful You! And now he’s in front of us! Do we take a picture? Ask for an autograph? Ask for his number? OMG! He’s just so cute!” They were just all silent, eyes wide open, with their jaws on the floor. Such is the Daniel Padilla effect.
Ladies and gentlemen, Daniel Padilla is the most popular young actor in Philippine show business today.
