SINCE 2016 is an election year, I thought about the qualities of the President. Unfortunately, he has opined that he is in favor of reelection. There are others who disagree with him: Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr. and Senate President Franklin Drilon have asked that “no elections” be forgotten, because they haven’t received any instruction from the Liberal Party to pursue this. Malacañang has said the whole thing is confused. Even the President is confused.
The President, who has more than a year left in his term, is so confused that he cannot decide if he should run again or not. He cannot do this, since he is the son of Cory Aquino and, as such, is not decided.
It seems that the President is violating his father Ninoy’s trust, because the late senator was the one who said President Marcos was overstaying. One danger is to
become a dictator like Marcos.
I’m quite convinced that the President will succeed in running for a second term when he makes clear that the daang matuwid (straight path) is obvious. But that is uncertain.
One trait that the President should have is intelligence. He has to make many decisions during crises. It is not enough for him to act according to instinct, to be emotional. He has to be intelligent in all issues, whether they are crises or personal matters. He has to be intelligent and know the point of view of both sides.
The President has to be devoid of personal feelings, and to see humor in both issues and personal crises. He has to be humorous.
And, last, he must be a politician who knows that he must consider all things. He cannot do anything else.
The President can be one unholy thing. Nepotism and the Supreme Court (SC) are part of the problem. Would you believe that the President is asking for the downgrading of the SC? This is one signal that is clear for the President.
