FOLLOWING the approval of the loan by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the World Bank last week, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday said they are set to co-implement the P23-billion Metro Manila Flood Management Project.
The multibillion-peso project, which will be implemented by MMDA, together with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), is expected to improve flood management in Metro Manila.
Under the project, the DPWH will be responsible for the modernization of 36 MMDA-operated pumping stations and the construction of new ones.
The National Housing Authority (NHA) and the Social Housing Finance Corp. (SHFC) will provide for the resettlement of informal-settler families (ISFs) along the project’s technical footprint.
The MMDA said they will focus on carrying out community-based and solid-waste management activities in the vicinity of pumping stations, waterways and drainage channels.
“Improvement of solid-waste collection services, community mobilization and awareness campaigns, incentive-based waste collection and the purchase of waste-collection equipment are some of the identified activities for this component,” the MMDA said.
The MMDA said that component is expected to support other existing MMDA flood control and cleanup operations, such as the “Estero Blitz”, the dredging of open waterways, declogging of drainage laterals and de-silting of drainage mains and interceptors.
The project will be implemented in 2018-2023 and is expected to benefit 3.5 million people or 760,000 households living within the affected drainage areas.
