FURNITURE and styling brand Moss Manila Home blends that relaxed, California-inspired vibe with its signature contemporary maximalist aesthetic in a new collection, called “Manila Living, California Dreaming”.
A recent trip to the desert resort city of Palm Springs inspired the brand’s owners, Cyndi Fernandez-Beltran and Happy Fernandez-Victorino, to come up with pieces that exude calm and glamour for their third anniversary offering. Travel, the sisters say, has always been essential to their design process.
“We love the unique, stylish vibe of the city, and we wanted to translate that into furniture,” said Happy at the collection’s recent launch at Manila House, calling into mind California’s bright, cloudless skies and towering palm trees.
The new collection showcases 10 pieces that take elements from the midcentury modern-era design prominent in Palm Springs, such as pleating and channeled tufting, combined with Moss Manila Home’s modern-meets-timeless designs. The items also show harmony between the brand’s palette of black, white and gold, with the inspiration’s livelier hues of rich green and soft pink.
Sprucing up the new line are three items made in collaboration with different personalities. There’s a Bar Cabinet by model/entrepreneur Rissa Mananquil-Trillo, a Buffet Cabinet by socialite Tessa Prieto-Valdez and a Channeled Bench by blogger Camille Co.
Mananquil-Trillo said Palms Springs reminds her of a stylish vacation, one that’s more sophisticated than Las Vegas, but more laid back than Los Angeles. As such, she went with the color green for her Bar Cabinet to invite calmness and serenity. The piece also features a multilayered design, perfect for elevating the entertaining experience for guests, she said.
Meanwhile, the item by Prieto-Valdez reflects her personality as someone who loves to party. Her Buffet Cabinet has a white and gold chevron pattern on the doors, and an eye-catching pink marble, instead of the usual white. “I keep saying pink is the new black. It’s so me. If I were a piece of furniture, I would be that.”
Lastly, there’s the Channeled Bench from Co. The blogger just moved into a new home, and wanted to create something that would compliment her walk-in closet. She came up with a piece that’s “very millennial, very me”, one that gives off an energetic vibe but stays casual at the same time.
Other pieces featured in the collection are the Avalon Fur Chair, Canyon Bar Cart, Casa Marble Stool, Marilyn Chair, Palm Springs Sofa, Parker Etagere and the Riviera Coffee Table.
