MALACAñANG has declared December 19 a special nonworking day in Muntinlupa as the city marks its centennial anniversary.
By authority of President Duterte, Executive Secretary Salvador C. Medialdea signed Proclamation 327 declaring the holiday.
The declaration was made on October 4 to give Muntinlupa residents the opportunity to commemorate the 100th founding year of the city.
“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the city of Muntinlupa be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies,” Medialdea said in the proclamation.
The citywide events for the centennial celebration include a Thanksgiving Mass at Muntinlupa City Hall Grounds in Putatan and a Centennial Festival at Muntinlupa Sports Complex in Tunasan.
Through the Muntinlupa Centennial Commission, the local government has been conducting a yearlong series of activities for the grandest occasion.
These are the inauguration of Centennial Avenue, the holding of an art contest, citywide boodle fight, a march, motocross and a festival of Muntinlupa entrepreneurs, among others.
On December 19, 1917, the independent status as a municipality was vested upon Muntinlupa after being under the province of Rizal by virtue of Executive Order 108 of Gov. General Francis Burton Harris.
Started as an agricultural town where farming and fishing were the primary source of living, it has since transformed into a highly urbanized city, a residential haven and home to medical institutions and business industries.
