THE Subic Bay International Triathlon (SUBIT) returns after a two-year hiatus with a traditional international cast at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone on May 1.
The country’s longest running triathlon—now on its 29th year—has helped realize what was
envisioned by the organizing Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) for SUBIT to contribute to Subic Bay Freeport’s emerging as “sports mecca.”
Newly-installed Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Chairman and Administrator Rolen Paulino
was a member of the inaugural SUBIT organizing committee and played a vital role as assistant race director.
Partnering with TRAP in SUBIT are SBMA, Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Olympic Committee with Standard Insurance, Asian Center for Insulation Phils., Pocari Sweat and FINIS.
SUBIT is at the forefront of the development of our triathletes.
“I’m proud to say SUBIT has produced Southeast Asian Games champions, Asian duathlon gold medalist and Asian Games [2014 Incheon and 2018 Palembang] notable performers,” TRAP President Tom Carrasco said. “We should get a podium soon at the Asian level in triathlon.”
Carrasco added: “Our duathletes copped gold medals in the last staging of the Powerman events in Asia.”
Prime SUBIT’s products include SEA Games champions John Chicano and Kim Mangrobang (2019), Nikko Huelgas and Mangrobang (2017), Huelgas and Ma. Claire Adorna (2015), Ryan Mendoza (2007, duathlon), Youth Olympics qualifier Vicky Deldio, Columbia World Games qualifiers Carlo Pedregosa and Mirasol Abad, Birmingham (Alabama, USA) World Games qualifiers Chicano, Fernando Casares and Mangrobang, Asian Games top 10 Chicano (10th), Mangrobang (seventh), Kim Kilgroe (ninth, 2018) and Adorna (seventh) and Mangrobang (ninth, 2014).
TRAP continues the recruitment process for new crop of young triathletes such as Raven Faith Alcoseba, Gene Heart Quiambao, Kim Remolino, Lipura twins, Erika Burgos and Mathew Hermosa with SUBIT as their acid test.
