San Miguel Corp. (SMC), the proponent of the P735-billion Bulacan airport project in Bulakan, Bulacan, has set aside at least P1 billion for the rehabilitation of the Pasig River in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The rehabilitation effort, which involves dredging and cleanup of the major waterway, is expected to commence before the end of the month, with the hope of reviving what it describes as “biologically inactive river.”
SMC has been actively supporting the government’s effort to ease flooding in Metro Manila, including flood-prone areas in Bulacan, as it pursues its multi-billion airport project, criticized by various environmental groups as environmentally-destructive.
