Scammers are finding new ways to trick the public who must need to be smarter to protect their account, according to BDO Unibank Inc.
In an advisory, the Sy-led bank said scammers are now sending “urgent-sounding” emails to trick the customers into clicking malicious links.
BDO Unibank said that fraudsters are telling clients to click on the said links to “block unauthorized transactions” or “make sure your account is updated as part of a new system processing.”
The scammers, BDO said, are sending these links to email addresses they find online or on social media.
The bank earlier also warned the public of a similar scam. It noted there are new scams via text messages and emails asking clients to click on links to supposedly verify their accounts.
The phishing messages claim they detected a suspicious activity in the clients’ accounts, tricking them to visit a fake website to check.
“Scammers will use the ‘User ID’ and ‘Password’ entered in their lookalike BDO login page to access online accounts,” the bank said.
The bank is reminding clients “it will NEVER” ask them to verify their accounts or transactions in such a manner.
Earlier, it also warned the public about fake social media posts regarding its supposed distribution of cash assistance amid the coronavirus pandemic.
A fake BDO Facebook page was claiming that it was releasing a P10-million financial aid to the public. To avail, one needs to comment on the said post and send a message to the page administrator.
The page also appears to be deceiving the public that it is associated with a government agency in-charge of distributing social amelioration.
BDO advised its clients to never share any information about their BDO account or debit card to the said page as the scammer may use it for online shopping or money transfer.
