SAN SEBASTIAN College closed out an unsuccessful campaign with a bang, slamming Jose Rizal University (JRU), 85-58, on Thursday in the 92nd National Collegiate Athletic Association seniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
Allyn Bulanadi scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Michael Calisaan and Ryan Costelo finished with 13 points apiece for the Stags, who wound up with eight wins and 11 losses for the season, an improvement from their 6-12 record in Season 91.
“The boys showed that they don’t want to lose anymore,” San Sebastian Head Coach Egay Macaraya said. “Hopefully, we can bring this to Season 93.”
San Sebastian went to business early with Alvin Capobres, who had 12 points in the game, hitting two quick triples and Costelo joining the fray in the second period for a commanding 42-29 advantage at the half.
The Stags were fiercer in the second half and led by as many as 32 points in the fourth period, behind Bulanadi’s three-pointers.
Paolo Pontejos nailed two straight triples in the final two minutes for the Heavy Bombers, who ended up with a 9-9 record in the season.
If not for a 1-9 record to start the season, the Stags could have stayed in the hunt. They won seven of their nine games in the second round, the second-best performance behind the Arellano University Chiefs (6-1), who have yet to close out the regular season against the San Beda Red Lions.
Pontejos led the Bombers with 14 points, all he made in the second half, and grabbed six rebounds, while Abdoulad Poutouochi was limited to 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.
