AMID the expected influx of devotees at Quiapo Church and Quirino Grandstand, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) issued safety reminders and tips for traditional Traslacion from January 7 to January 9.
“Millions of Filipino Catholics will brave the massive heat of the sun to participate in the Traslacion,”PRC Chairman and CEO Richard Gordon said.
Gordon said large crowds and long exposure in the sun may lead to dehydration, hyperthermia, hypoglycemia, and diarrhea.
“We shared our safety tips on our social media platforms detailing what participants should do and prepare for during the festivities. We are urging everyone to remain vigilant and prioritize their well-being to have a safe and peaceful Traslacion,”
At least two million Catholic faithfuls are expected to join the Feast of the Black Nazareno on January 9 as the traditional Traslacion will resume this year after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Gordon emphasized the importance of being vigilant, cautioning the public about the potential risks associated with large crowds, such as stampedes and certain health-related issues.
PRC Secretary-General Dr. Gwen Pang, meanwhile, said that the organization has further improved its annual assistance for Black Nazarene devotees, which is included in PRC’s preparation and response operation this year.
“We also encourage pregnant women, children, and the elderly to attend the grand procession virtually, considering the emergencies PRC encountered in previous Traslacion, including major medical issues like cardiac arrest and childbirth,” said Dr. Pang, adding that the public can check the safety reminders on www.redcross.org.ph.
The PRC will also assist the participants of the upcoming Sinulog Festival in Cebu and Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo.
