The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) have called on nominations of possible National Artists in several categories.
The Order of National Artist (ONA) is regarded as the highest national recognition given to Filipinos who made significant contributions to art and cultural heritage.
“Baka naman mayroon tayong kilala na malaki ang kontribusyon sa larangan ng sining… napaka-importante sa atin na ang mga kontribusyon ng mga indibidwal na malaki ang kanilang iginawad sa bansa, kung mayroon kayong nais i-nominate, ito na po, bukas na ang nominations for the [ONA],” said National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab.
The deadline for submission of nominations is scheduled on June 30, 2024.
Candidates may be nominated under the following categories: Dance, Music, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film and Broadcast Arts, Architecture and Allied Arts, and Design.
However, candidates must meet certain criteria: artists may be living or deceased as long as they are Filipino citizens; their works must build a sense of nationhood; might have pioneered a mode of creative expression or style; artists recognized in prestigious national and international awards.
Candidates will undergo a “rigorous process” to be awarded National Artist, said NCCA.
“It’s a very rigorous process, I can assure you,” said NCCA Chairperson Victorino Mapa Manalo.
