MEGA Global Corp. has restructured itself with the launching of its newest subsidiary, Mega Prime Foods Inc. (MPFI), aimed at helping elevate the lives of Filipinos by providing affordable yet nutritious food with its constant innovation.
Such initiative sets MPFI apart from the fishing and canning unit Mega Fishing Corp. (MFC) and the corporate citizenship arm Mega Tiu-Lim Foundation.
“As a larger subsidiary, MPFI will house all of the products currently known under Mega and now also serves as an incubator for the new releases in the future. This will be the hub of our research and development [R&D] group. It will also be in charge of the sales and distribution of the entire portfolio,” Mega Global Chief Operating Officer (COO) Michelle Tiu Lim-Chan said in their media briefing in Quezon City on Tuesday.
The reorganization, likewise, professionalizes Mega Global’s corporate structure in preparation for the company’s future growth.
“This is just a change in structure because we aim to professionalize our entire business ecosystems so that we can deliver the highest quality products to Filipinos better and faster,” she said.
Healthy food for every Juan
EXPANDING Mega’s current product portfolio, MPFI embodies the brand’s belief that nutritious food should be easily available to all Filipinos, as vividly captured in its tagline: “Improving every day, one meal at a time.”
“We assure everyone of the consistent freshness and highest quality in the products that we serve,” emphasized Chan.
With this in mind, it will increase its production with the January 2023 opening of its P1 billion Mega Manufacturing Plant in Sto. Tomas, Batangas, which can produce healthy, nutritious, and affordable products. Spanning around 2.3 hectares, this factory will have a lot of production lines.
“We will start with two lines for sardines. Its capacity, I think, is around 5,000 [cans of sardines] per day,” the COO told the BusinessMirror in a sideline interview.
“When it becomes fully operational, we actually are expected to produce about 160 million canned sardines across the whole, entire production line with just one year. So that will really help us a lot in terms of sales and in terms of inventories,” added Mega Global Chief Technical and Innovations Officer (CTIO) Malcolm Tiu-Lim.
In support of the community where it operates, the new facility will generate employment and livelihood opportunities amid the ensuing pandemic.
“The initial jobs that we’re looking at for Sto. Tomas directly impacted by the plant, meaning the factory workers, the R&D specialists, the QA [quality assurance personnel] will go up to a thousand,” noted Mega Global Chief Growth and Development Officer Marvin Tiu-Lim.
“But we have to also realize that we will be impacting many people such as the fishermen that are there in the sea [with] their livelihood. We will depend on them for their fish catch. So that will impact indirectly hundreds of thousands of families nationwide,” he pointed out.
The Mega Manufacturing Plant will, likewise, be opened to field trips to show MPFI’s commitment to support nutrition with proper education and boost tourism.
This world-class facility will produce food items to global specifications, as the firm adheres to internationally recognized certifications and standards, such as the FSSC: 22000 and HACCP, the European Union regulatory requirements, and HALAL accreditation to ensure its products comply to Islamic dietary requirements.
MPFI upholds sustainable practices such as zero-waste manufacturing capability and sustainable energy sources with the factory’s installation of solar panels that could lessen its carbon footprint emission of about 511 tons per year.
“So with these and more, MPFI upholds Mega’s endless commitment to global standards with its relentless pursuit in application of food technology, best practices, and innovations in its manufacturing and business processes,” said the CTIO.
The new subsidiary also intends to work for a food-secure Philippines through its various initiatives and innovations.
“Food security is essential to the well-being of Filipinos and is critical to the country’s socio-economic development. We recognize that we have a key role to play in ensuring food security and in nation-building,” Chan stressed.
“Through our innovations and investments in our people and processes, we are confident that MPFI can help the Philippines achieve food security while at the same time bringing sarap, saya, and sustansya to millions of Filipino families,” she added.
