The Department of National Defense (DND) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) paid tribute to the country’s heroes and frontliners as the defense-military establishment joined the country in commemorating National Heroes Day on Monday.
A simple but meaningful activity at the Libingan ng mga Bayani led by no less than President and Commander in Chief Ferdinand Marcos Jr. marked the observance of the national holiday.
The DND joined the Filipinos in observing the National Heroes Day by honoring the country’s heroes who have put the “nation and our people above all else, including themselves.”
It also recognized the services and contributions of “modern-day heroes” such as medical and disaster personnel who have been at the frontlines in the fight against Covid-19 and disaster response operations.
DND Officer in Charge Jose Faustino Jr. also recognized the sacrifices of overseas Filipino workers, who the government has long considered as modern-day heroes for keeping the economy afloat through their remittances.
“One of our heroes, Emilio Aguinaldo, said we could not free ourselves unless we move forward united in a single desire. Thus, during these times, we must show courage and strength in the face of challenges and remain united as we move forward in attaining peace and progress for our motherland,” Faustino said.
A flag raising was held and a wreath was offered at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Libingan ng mga Bayani as tribute to Filipino heroes.
The activities were joined by Faustino; House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez; Taguig City Mayor Maria Laarni Cayetano; AFP major service commanders; National Police chief Rodolfo Azurin Jr.; the chief of the Philippine Coast Guard; Filipino veterans; members of the Diplomatic Corps and other guests.
