Red Lions debuts in preseason tilt vs Green Archers

YURI ESCUETA gets his baptism of fire as Red Lions coach.

SAN BEDA embarks on a new era as it makes its debut in the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup against De La Salle on Sunday at Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Newly appointed head coach Yuri Escueta gets his baptism of fire as he tries to steer the Red Lions to their first win in Group B in the 5 p.m. main event.

But more than anything, what matters for the first-year mentor is laying the team’s foundation against the pressures he faces.
“It’s important for us to develop these players, their focus here in the preseason heading into the NCAA [National Collegiate Athletic Association],” Escueta said.
Veteran James Kwekuteye teams up with Ralph Penuela and incoming sophomores Justine Sanchez and Tony Ynot for the Red Lions as they face a Green Archers side seeking a second straight victory behind rookie Kevin Quiambao.

Lyceum of the Philippines University (1-0) also tries to stay atop Group B when it takes on winless Jose Rizal University (0-2) at 9 a.m.

The Pirates are coming off a stellar 71-62 win over Far Eastern University where Mac Guadana nailed seven three-pointers for a tournament-best 29 points.

Group A action also highlights the loaded Sunday schedule.
Emilio Aguinaldo College (1-1) aims for a bounce back win against Arellano University (0-2) at 11 a.m., National University (1-0) guns for its second straight victory against winless University of the East (0-2) at 1 p.m. and Mapua (0-1) and St. Benilde (0-1) clash for their first win at 3 p.m.
