Malacañang said the ongoing surge in new daily novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19) patients nationwide remains within government targets.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the current number of daily Covid cases remains below the 20,000 per day projection of the government.
Last Monday, the Department of Health (DOH) registered 18,332 new Covid-19 cases, which is currently the highest daily case since the onset of the pandemic last year.
Roque said they anticipated the spike in infections since it is more infectious than the other variant of SARS-CoV-2.
The higher number of cases has led to high health care utilization nationwide despite recent government efforts to increase the number of medical facilities for Covid patients.
As of Aug. 24, 2021, DOH 73 percent of the 4,200 ICU beds nationwide were occupied.
Meanwhile, 62 percent of the 20,200 isolation beds nationwide for Covid-19 patients were also utilized, while for the 14,500 ward beds, the utilization rate was at 67 percent.
Roque said the government’s One Hospital Command Center, which is in charge of distributing Covid-19 to medical facilities with available space, will ensure all the infected patients will get medical treatment if necessary.
He also said they are anticipating the rising vaccination rate nationwide will help minimize hospitalization and fatalities due to Covid-19.
Over 30 million Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered by the government since last March.
