A TOTAL of 27 inmates have so far died since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country last March.
Data obtained from the Department of Justice.(DOJ) showed that there were a total of 600 cases of COVID-19 infection among persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the national penitentiaries and Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) personnel as of December 15.
Out of this number, 130 are considered active cases while the remaining 441 have recovered.
The BuCor said the “active cases are all mild and asymptomatic.”
The COVID-19 cases were recorded both at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) and the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW).
To contain the spread of the virus, the BuCor immediately suspend visitation rights for PDLs.
However, the BuCor decided to launch the so-called “E-dalaw” to give PDLs access to their loved ones via online.
