Some 12,000 employees of the Manila International Airport Authority (Miaa) are reportedly set to be affected by a proposed rehabilitation, or privatization, plan to be undertaken by construction firm Megawide Corp.
Reliable sources at the airport, however, said the rehabilitation plan is still being evaluated by the National Economic and Development Authority-Investment Coordination Committee (Neda-ICC) and the Miaa.
Under the proposed “operate and transfer deal” with Megawide, the employees will have to re-apply before some of them could be “absorbed” in accordance with previous negotiations.
Since not everybody could be taken back, there are fears among the employees that many of them would be rendered jobless once the deal is approved.
However, airport authorities have assured the employees not to be alarmed since the proposal is still being evaluated.
It was reported during a recent House plenary deliberations on the proposed national budget for next year that the Department of Transportation bared that some Ninoy Aquino International Airport workers may be terminated due to the government’s rehabilitate, operate and transfer deal with Megawide Corp.
