ALDIN AYO, the former University of Santo Tomas men’s basketball head coach banned indefinitely by the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), challenged his critics now that he was cleared by the Sorsogon provincial police two days ago.
“Come to my house and farm in Capuy, Sorsogon and see for yourself. For the harvest is plenty and the laborers are few,” Ayo said in a statement sent to reporters Friday night, insisting he did not violate any health and quarantine protocols imposed by the government.
“The result of the investigation conducted by the proper government authorizes, the PNP, on the ground – at my house and farm, will certainly complement my position on the matter: that I have not in any way violated any national and local government health protocol or [the] IATF regulations,” his statement said.
Ayo was heavily criticized by various sectors who said he endangered the health and well-being of his student-athletes when they conducted an unauthorized activity in Capuy, Sorsogon, last June—where they caught in a video playing basketball inside Ayo’s house.
But Ayo was cleared by the Sorsogon Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Office of Governor Francis “Chiz” Escudero last September 28 for any wrongdoing. The police report said Ayo didn’t hold any basketball game or training in Capuy.
The police report concluded that the Growling Tigers tended Ayo’s piggery, planted trees and farmed the field during their stay. The investigation also said that all players had pertinent travel documents and underwent the compulsory 14-day quarantine after being tested of Covid-19.
Ayo is hopeful the UAAP will reverse its decision to ban him indefinitely.
“I have dutifully raised matters overlooked by the UST fact-finding committee in their findings which became the basis for the UAAP decision. These pertinent matters, if properly considered, may significantly alter the decision of the UAAP board,” the statement also said.
