THE Department of Education (DepEd) said the agency is targeting to hire 10,000 new teachers this year.
During the recent joint meeting conducted by the House Committees on Appropriations and of Basic Education and Culture to assess the DepEd’s budget performance, Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan said these new teachers will be deployed nationwide.
Of 10,000 new teacher items, he said 2,797 items are for kindergarten/elementary; 2,443 items for junior high school; and 4,770 items for senior high school.
Under the 2019 budget, the government has allotted P2.11 billion for this initiative.
The agency added that P20.3 billion was allocated this year to cover 1.3 million senior high schools (SHS) nationwide under the SHS Voucher Program.
Review
Meanwhile, House Committee on Basic Education and Culture Member Rep. Florida Robes of San Jose Del Monte urged the DepEd to review the average teacher-to-student ratio to improve the country’s teaching systems.
In the same hearing, Malaluan said there is an average of one teacher for every 29 elementary school students, one teacher for every 25 junior high school students, and one teacher for every 29 senior high school students for school year 2018-2019.
However, he said, that ratio indicates the national average, meaning, certain schools face an excess of teachers while others have deficiencies.
Malaluan added that contributing factors are the relocation and transition issues of placing teachers in underserved areas.
“It really requires our divisions to be able to reallocate teachers where there are excess [like in Metro Manila] and be able to deploy them to the areas where they need more teachers from the existing teaching force. But it’s also difficult for teachers to just simply move from one location to the other,” he said.
