THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas on Wednesday announced that BSP Governor Nestor A. Espenilla Jr. is extending his leave again for this month, this time until October 26, in light of his medical treatment.
“In the meantime, the BSP team stays steadfast in pursuing the Continuity ++ Agenda while Governor Espenilla is completing his treatment,” the BSP said.
Last month the governor —who is battling early stage tongue cancer detected earlier this year—announced that he will be out of the office from September 19 to October 2 for treatment.
He then extended that medical leave for another two weeks earlier this month.
With his leave, Espenilla was not able to preside over the recent monetary policy meeting on September 27. BSP Deputy Governor Chuchi G. Fonacier sat in his place as officer in charge.
Espenilla earlier said his treatment is “progressing well” but he will be needing rest to “give it the best chance possible.”
The governor also gave a “so far, so good” update on Wednesday.
The BSP said that following his medical leave, the governor “may be taking intermittent medical leaves.”
The Central Bank added, “During his medical leaves, BSP deputy governors will be taking turns as OIC in accordance with established BSP business continuity protocols.”
