TACLOBAN CITY—The household population of Eastern Visayas reached 4,425,172 persons in 2015. This is 335,438 higher than the 4,089,734-household population reported in 2010. The figure was based on the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN) conducted in August 2015.
The household population comprised 99.7 percent of the total regional population, while the remaining 0.3 percent is comprised of the institutional population, or those residing in collective or institutional living quarters, such as hospitals, orphanages and military camps; and Filipinos in Philippine embassies, consulates and missions abroad.
Leyte (excluding Tacloban City) had the highest number of household population among provinces with 1.72 million, accounting for 38.8 percent of the total household population in the region. Biliran recorded the smallest household population with 170,735.
Among cities (excluding Tacloban City), Ormoc City, Leyte had the highest number of household population with 214,464. The City of Borongan, Eastern Samar recorded the least number of household population with 68,464.
Tacloban City, the lone Highly Urbanized City (HUC) in the region, recorded a total of 240,513 household population.
The total number of households in the region increased by 13.9 percent in 2015, from 865,657 household in 2010 to 985,913 households in 2015.
Leyte (excluding Tacloban City) recorded the most number of households among provinces with 405,873.
Biliran recorded the least number of households with 38,518.
Among cities (excluding Tacloban City), Ormoc City, Leyte had the highest number of households with 50,341, while the City of Borongan, Eastern Samar recorded the least number of households with 15,120.
Tacloban City, the HUC in the region, registered 50,547 households in 2015, from 45,478 households in 2010.
The average household size (AHS) in the region in 2015 was recorded at 4.5 persons, lower than the AHS of 4.7 persons in 2010. This means that based on the recent census taking, on the average, a typical household in Eastern Visayas had less than five members.
Northern Samar recorded the highest AHS in the region of 5 persons. Leyte (excluding Tacloban City) posted the lowest average household size of 4.2 persons.
Among cities (excluding Tacloban City), the City of Catbalogan, Samar had the highest average household size at 4.9 persons, closely followed by Calbayog City, Samar with 4.8 persons. The City of Baybay, Leyte recorded the lowest AHS of 4.1 persons.
Meanwhile, Tacloban City, posted an AHS of 4.8 persons.
The POPCEN 2015 was undertaken by the Philippine Statistics Authority in August 2015 pursuant to Republic Act 10625, also known as the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013 and Executive Order 352—Designation of Statistical Activities That Will Generate Critical Data for Decision-Making of the Government and the Private Sector, which stipulates the conduct of a mid-decade census primarily to update the population count in all barangays nationwide.
