UNLESS Phoenix gets into a slump, there’s no stopping the Accelerators from their march to the playoffs.
Things could not have look any better for the Accelerators, who are leading the league with their 4-0 record and remain the only unbeaten team in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) D-League Foundation Cup.
Notwithstanding their bench depth and dominance, Coach Eric Gonzales insists his troops are still a work in progress.
“We still lacked consistency. The killer instinct is not yet there. We tend to lose our focus when we lead big,” offered Gonzales, adding that complacency remains a cause of concern.
The eight-day break should help the reigning Aspirants Cup champions to work on some concerns and recharge for Monday’s face-off against winless Topstar Mindanao.
The Aguilas may be a mismatch against the Accelerators, but Gonzales warned his chargers against overconfidence. “Mga player din ang mga ‘yan kaya hindi puwedeng biruin.”
Topstar’s chances to break into the win column got a boost with the absence of Phoenix point-forward Mac Belo in the scheduled 4 o’clock encounter at the Ynares Arena in Pasig City.
Belo, last conference’s Most Valuable Player, has been suspended for one game for elbowing Blustar’s Ting Chun Hong in the face during the two team’s match on June 16. He was also fined P5,000 by the PBA Commissioner’s Office. Phoenix won the game, 97-94.
In the other game, struggling teams Blustar Detergent and AMA Online Education battle each other at 6 p.m.
The Dragons snapped a three-game losing streak with an 89-75 win against the Aguilas on Thursday. Topstar and AMA bring up the rear with 0-4 record.
