A tough-talking mayor is the country’s new president and a widow and neophyte legislator is his vice president, according to the official congressional count of the votes Friday.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte emerged as the landslide winner of the May 9 presidential election and Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo won the tight race for vice president after Congress wrapped up its three-day tally of the votes.
Duterte garnered 16,601,997 votes, beating four other candidates. Robredo won with 14,418,817 votes against five other contenders, according to the official canvass results.
