PHILIPPINE Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia Jr. was recently conferred the Order of Sikatuna, with the rank of Grand Cross (Datu), in recognition of his exemplary accomplishments in working for the advancement of the country’s national interests in its relations with the United States.
In giving the award, President Aquino cited Cuisia, a political appointee, as someone that provides solutions to problems and tireless in promoting Philippine interests wherever they have been assigned.
President Aquino also commended Cuisia for his unrelenting effort and dedication in facilitating increased trade, tourism, investment and people-to-people exchanges between the Philippines and the US.
Cuisia was joined by his family when he received the award from President Aquino.
“I am humbled and greatly honored by this recognition. I sincerely thank President Aquino and Secretary Albert del Rosario for entrusting me with one of the most important diplomatic posts of our country. Without their trust and confidence, I would not have had the opportunity to further develop our alliance and partnership with the United States,” Cuisia said.
He added: “Everywhere I go in this country, Americans and other foreigners would tell me their positive views about their Filipino colleagues, neighbors, friends and acquaintances. These testimonials make me proud to be your ambassador and inspire the Philippine Embassy and consulates in the US to ensure that we represent our country effectively.”
Cuisia also praised outgoing Foreign Secretary Albert F. del Rosario for his unwavering dedication and indefatigable energy have resulted in a reenergized department anchored on a foreign policy that embraces the total protection of national interest.
Cuisia said he is hopeful the next administration would preserve and build on the gains made during President Aquino’s term.
“We also hope that the new set of government leaders will have the determination and game plan to reduce poverty; create jobs at home; modernize infrastructure; improve the peace and order situation; and bring a just and lasting peace in Mindanao,” Cuisia said.
The Order of Sikatuna is a diplomatic merit conferred upon individuals who have rendered exceptional and meritorious services to the country.
It is given to diplomats who have rendered conspicuous service in fostering, developing and strengthening relations between their country and the Philippines or to Department of Foreign Affairs personnel who have provided outstanding service to the country.
It is one of the three senior honors the government can confer along with the Philippine Legion of Honor and the Order of Lakandula.
President Aquino appointed Cuisia as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the US in November 2010. He was confirmed by the Commission on Appointments on February 2011 and formally assumed his post on April the same year.
Cuisia is credited for spearheading and shepherding innovative programs such as the groundbreaking Filipino-American Youth Leadership Program and for strongly supporting the establishment of the Philippines-US Society.
