HAPPY New Year to my readers and everyone in the sports community.
The year 2017 again showed the highs and lows in sports—the Golden State Warriors regaining the National Basketball Association title and the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles returning to the top of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines mountain after five years.
Lewis Hamilton won his fourth F1 world championship. The New England Patriots rode the legend of Tom Brady to beat the Atlanta Falcons, 34-28, in overtime, overcoming a 25-point halftime deficit.
There was also MMA vs. boxing, as Conor McGregor crossed over to boxing to fight undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) went through some adversity, which almost tore the league apart. Of the 12 teams, seven went against Commissioner Chito Narvasa, while five liked to see his term get extended. In the end, Narvasa stepped down and a search for the man to lead the PBA begins.
The 24 gold-medal output of our athletes at the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur was a far cry from the 54 mints targeted by a senior sports officials.
The UFC and Bellator continued to wage battle in MMA, both putting up one quality fight card after another.
We look forward to another year in sports. We look forward to athletes outdoing themselves breaking and setting records.
