PHOENIX Petroleum Philippines Inc., led by its corporate social responsibility arm, Phoenix Philippines Foundation, laid artificial reefs in Davao City on September 30.
Company officials and employees, together with volunteers from the Philippine Coast Guard and the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary, built 30 artificial reefs at Phoenix Petroleum’s headquarters in Davao City. Each reef measured 110 centimeters x 70 cm and were built using corrugated round bars, wire mesh, lime sand and cement.
The structure of the reefs were made for a sturdy and suitable home for pelagic fish, giving them protection and allowing them to breed and grow their number.
The reefs were laid in marine-protected areas in Barangay Vicente Hizon in Lanang and in Barangay Centro Jerome in Agdao, both in Davao City.
The seabeds in these locations are protected by barangay ordinances and the Barangay Bantay Dagat, as well as coast guards; thus, are kept safe from illegal fishing and destructive marine practices.
“Taking care of the environment is one of the primary advocacies of the Phoenix Philippines Foundation, and this new project contributes to our efforts of saving our planet,” Phoenix Petroleum Vice President for External Affairs Raymond Zorrilla said.
Phoenix Petroleum also engaged in coastal cleanup activities around the country in September in celebration of International Coastal Cleanup Day, and as part of its efforts of preserving the environment for future generations.
