AFTER expanding the runways, taxiways and the existing passenger terminal building of the Tuguegarao Airport, the transportation department is moving toward the development of the services of the air hub up north.
Transportation Undersecretary Manuel Antonio L. Tamayo said the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is preparing to further improve the airport in Cagayan, including the rationalization of office spaces and service counters to improve passenger comfort.
“This includes the expansion of the existing predeparture and check-in areas of the passenger-terminal building. The second floor shall also be developed for additional check-in counters, all for passenger convenience,” he said.
Transportation Secretary Arthur P. Tugade led the inauguration and soft opening of the expanded and rehabilitated terminal of the airport on Wednesday.
The expansion project included site, concrete, metal and ceiling works. It covers supply of labor, materials and equipment to complete the rehabilitation of walls, floor tiles, ceiling panels and construction of columns, among other improvements.
The expansion and rehabilitation project also covers architectural works and finishes to improve the overall passenger experience. This includes the laying of granite-floor tiles in the arrival and departure areas, painting of interior and exterior walls, installation of doors and windows, and improvement of toilet facilities.
Apart from the terminal, the runway and taxiway of the Tuguegarao Airport were also widened in 2017. Its airfield lighting system, which is necessary for night-time operations, was also upgraded.
“Our goal is to improve and develop our airports all over the country. The airport is the first thing that a traveler sees when visiting a place, and we should be able to make a great first impression,” Tugade said.
