MEMBERS of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in the Philippines started the celebration of Christmas with the “Christmas Temple Lighting” on Thursday evening. Held at its temple in White Plains, Quezon City, the annual lighting was hosted by the Philippines Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was attended by guests from interfaith, LDS Charities project partners, members of the media and community leaders.
Preceding the lighting was musical numbers by the Manila Mission Choir and Sis. Danette Garrett, message by President Ian Ardern, video showing of A Star is Born and dinner at the Missionary Training Center activity area. After the dinner, the guests proceeded to the temple grounds across the street.
Thousands of guests are expected to visit the temple grounds this year since it is open to the public, said Haidi F. Fajardo, LDS area director of Public Affairs.
The Christmas Temple Lighting has become a yearly tradition that started more than 15 years ago. Lights are turned on at dusk and turned off at 10 p.m., from Monday to Saturday, and will be on display until the end of New Year’s Eve. Fajardo said since 2013, the lights used were already energy-conserving light-emitting diode.
LED lights are low energy and do not use nearly as much electricity, which results in saving energy and costs. LED lights are also cooler in temperature, protecting the trees from excess heat.
