AS we celebrate the day of independence for the Filipino people, it is good to also reflect on what the Bible says about freedom. This is a recurring theme in the holy book, and as we are presently in the middle of several challenges as a nation, we can also look at the Bible for wisdom and guidance.
In the Bible, people are brought into freedom (from slavery) for one specific purpose: to serve and worship God, and bear witness to his greatness. In the same way, our independence brings with it this same responsibility—our freedom must never be abused, but instead the used to move towards the greater good. From the sacrifices of our heroes, we are now free so that we may serve our country and our countrymen.
Allow me to share four Bible verses that talk about freedom or independence.
“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” (Galatians 5:13) Being free is never an excuse to do anything we want. The essence of true freedom is service: we are made free so that we may serve our countrymen.
“To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (Revelation 1:6) Let us not forget God and the people who sacrificed their blood so we could enjoy the freedoms we have now. The Bible teaches us to be grateful, to be respectful and to never forget.
“Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.” (1 Peter 2:16) Aside from serving country and fellowmen, let us use our democracy to serve our God. There are people who use freedom as an excuse to do evil—don’t be this person. Cherish the freedom we have been given and commit ourselves to true service.
“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17) The Bible also teaches that freedom can be found in God. If we are feeling restrained, let us reach out to Him for deliverance. This means putting God in our hearts so that His Spirit dwells in us.
My fervent wish today is for Filipinos to enjoy true democracy and real independence. And as we do so, may we never forget the responsibilities that go with the freedom we are given. May we also learn to be grateful for this blessing, and also learn to serve, like real patriots, our country and our fellowmen.
