One of the respected professions in the Philippines is the accountancy profession because of its prestige and good reputation imparted to the public. A great number of the members of this noble profession belong to the millennial generation (born between the early-1980s to early-2000s). Technology has always been part of the millennials’ life. This is constantly being applied to their respective chosen field of expertise. The attitudes and beliefs of these young individuals greatly affect the growth of their respective organizations.
Millennials are coming of age, and they are entering the work force with a work culture that is significantly different from the values that the previous generations upheld. Based on the survey made by Philippine Statistics Authority, almost 50 percent of the Philippine work force in 2015 is composed of millennials from 15 to 34 years old, and by 2030 it will rise to 70 percent.
Most of their concerns are about their growth in everything they do. Millennials find meaning in their duties and responsibilities, and that’s their ultimate parameter when evaluating job opportunities
being offered to them. They expect a rewarding experience from their employers and team leaders so that trainings and enhancement programs within the organization must be put into consideration. Work-life balance is also one of their concerns. They will not hesitate to resign and look for a better workplace if they find their current work unfulfilling.
Millennials are incorporating technology in their workplace. Gone are the days when accountants use manual worksheets, do tedious accounting functions manually and produce reports such as financial statements and budget matrix. They can perform their tasks immediately and have the results in an instant. Millennials find solutions to their problems using technology.
Millennials constantly connect to the Internet through laptops and smartphones. They don’t have to be stationary in the same work desk every day to manage their tasks, as they can work remotely. New innovative and advanced software tools are readily available in the market that are helpful in performing their tasks efficiently and effectively. They are result-driven individuals.
The millennials may not be as patient as those from the previous generations. However, they are capable of being involved in serving their community. Their passion and innovative values can contribute toward the developmental growth of the Philippines. Considering what Jose Rizal said, that the “youth is the hope of the fatherland,” they are the hope of the country. We, the millennial certified public accountants, are relying on the previous generations of accountants (CPAs) to help mold our generation with integrity and objectivity. In the end, we are willing to help in the development of our beloved country.
