If the saying “Show me the videos you watch on YouTube and I’ll tell you who you are” is true, then mine would say I’m confused and unfocused. Just kidding—there is no such saying.
YouTube is a black hole of sorts. You start out with music videos and an hour later, you’re listening to soothing music for small dogs. There really is so much content out there.
People are surprised when they learn that I love YouTube. Years ago, when my daughter was a teenager, I would watch videos of British content creators Dan Hill, Phil Lester, Caspar Lee and many others. I was at the first YouTube FanFest in the country that was held at Marriott Hotel’s Grand Ballroom, which was very new at that time.
It’s funny that now, I’m the one who watches a lot of videos. My teenager is now a working adult and she’d only have time during the weekends.
A number of my friends and colleagues are also now on YouTube, meaning they create content, because it’s the new frontier. Blogging killed print (ostensibly) while videos and Instagram are slowly killing blogging (this is a controversial opinion that I’m merely echoing, as it’s my blogger friends who told me this) because these days, people would rather watch than read. I believe that there’s room for everyone on the Internet and beyond. Print is not really dead and is making a slow but sure transition.
But back to YouTube—the statistics are mind-boggling. There are 1.9 billion active users at present. About 5 billion videos are watched every day by people around the world. Millennials are said to prefer YouTube two to one over traditional television (millennials and even those who are younger hardly watch traditional TV).
Anyway, there is so much interesting content out there and my favorites vary according to my present interests. So here are the channels I’ve been watching a lot of lately:
Wayne Goss (youtube.com/user/gossmakeupartist)
Contrary to what my friends think, I don’t watch a lot of makeup tutorials but I watch all of Wayne Goss’s videos and I believe every word he says. Why? Because Goss has never failed me. When he says this foundation is great, it really is. All the products that he says are good really perform well. But more than that, Goss is an excellent makeup artist with practical tips and tricks for normal people like myself. I can say that I learned how to apply foundation properly and make it look natural because of his videos, which are mercifully short and to the point.
Judy Ann Santos (bit.ly/2ysENaa)
I love how entertaining Santos’s cooking videos are and how practical she is as a homemaker and cook. Her recipes turn out well as I have tried several of them already from the Japanese food video. (youtu.be/XfKW1oVWluY)
MILLION Dance Studio (bit.ly/1NcZpjP)
I chanced upon this channel because of my weird obsession with the song “Rewrite the Stars.” 1MILLION is dance studio in Seoul’s Gangnam district. Their YouTube channel has over 12 million subscribers and their dance videos are simply amazing. The dance school’s choreographers work with some of Korea’s top entertainment companies, including SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment. Their channel has some of the best dances you’ll see.
