Teach for the Philippines, Inc. (TFP), a non-government organization (NGO) that focuses on making a positive impact in the public education system, has entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Sorsogon City LGU, Department of Education (DepEd) Sorsogon City, and geothermal leader Energy Development Corporation (EDC) to send teacher fellows to a local school in Sorsogon City. This marks TFP’s first teacher fellows in the Bicol Region.
Under the MOA, TFP will choose the teacher fellows to be assigned in public schools in Sorsogon City, in coordination with DepEd Sorsogon City. DepEd Sorsogon City will select the public schools where the teacher fellows will be assigned, and it will monitor and evaluate the teacher fellows’ performance. The teacher fellows have been assigned to Pumurayan Integrated School, a K-12 School in Brgy. Pumurayan.
EDC, on the other hand, will provide financial assistance pertinent to the expenses and needs of the teacher fellows.
The partnership was made official during a MOA signing ceremony at Pumurayan Integrated School.
EDC has supported education programs in the local community through school supplies distributions to students and financial scholarships for top-performing students in its partner schools in Sorsogon City and Manito, Albay. Moreover, these top-performing students receive assistance for their college entrance exams and financial assistance in the tertiary education through the CAREERS program.
TFP sends teacher fellows to different local public schools to become teachers for two years, while providing them with appropriate training and teaching materials that will help improve instruction in public schools.
EDC is the world’s largest vertically integrated geothermal company and the only diversified renewable energy firm in the Philippines, with a total installed capacity of 1,456.8 MW of purely renewable energy. It operates the 140-MW Bacman Geothermal Power Plant located in Manito, Albay and Sorsogon City.
