THE chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means on Tuesday said the panel will hear proposals to update motor vehicle user’s charges (MVUC) rates, including provision earmarking revenues for local manufacture of PUJs, before it hears proposed taxes on salty and sugary food, when session resumes after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s second State of the Nation Address.
Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Friday urged President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to veto the Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) bill when it reaches his desk, citing the grave constitutional questions that attended the process of its passage in Congress, besides what he called the serious flaws of the measure itself.
TWO former Senate presidents have warned lawmakers against “correcting” text in the enrolled bill of the Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF), saying this would certainly be open to legal challenge—even possible prosecution of involved parties. They cited only two ways to redress reported errors that have been attributed to the “hasty” passage of the measure on third and final reading at the Senate on May 31.
