Comelec conducting administrative preparations for Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections
The Commission on Elections is pushing through with all administrative preparations for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), despite calls from some lawmakers to postpone it.
Congress proclaims BBM, Sara winners of presidential, VP elections
Influential
The poll closed at 11:59 p.m., ET, on April 16. When the dust cleared, our President edged out other global celebrities in a news magazine’s poll of the 100 most influential people of the year. With 5 percent of the total “yes” votes, the President pulled ahead of others like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Facebook’s Liker in Chief Mark Zuckerberg. Incidentally, the President also roundly beat the spiritual leader of more than a billion souls all over the world—none other than the Pope.
Critical thinking
A while back, at a congressional committee hearing, my jaw hit the floor, as I listened to an elected official pontificate about how voter education was relevant only during election season. I would have argued against, but I got gaveled into silence. Out of respect for that august chamber, I stayed quiet, hoping that whoever had the floor next would challenge the notion that voter education was a “seasonal” pursuit at best. Only no one did. A brief overview of the 2016 elections
Ten days after the elections, 12 senators-elect and 46 winning party-list organizations were proclaimed by the commission en banc, sitting as the National Board of Canvassers. This marked the first time that the proclamation of all national election winners, save for the positions of President and Vice President, took place on the same day. In the past, it was not unusual for senators-elect to be proclaimed more than a week before the completion of the canvass for party-list representatives.
Because the Filipino deserves nothing less
A funny thing happened in Maputo, Mozambique. On Tuesday I was presenting the Commission on Elections’s (Comelec) experience in running the 2016 national and local elections, to an audience consisting of election management bodies from all over the world, when I casually dropped the fact that the Philippines had a population larger than a hundred million, of which more than 54 million were registered voters.
Comelec on Duterte ‘illegal’ campaign contributions: No complaint, no probe
THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is not inclined to conduct a motu proprio investigation into reports that President Duterte received illegal campaign contributions based on the Statement of Contributions and Expenditures (Soce) submitted to the poll body.
