LUCENA CITY—A former Quezon provincial board member and a gubernatorial candidate in next year’s midterm elections has written a no-holds barred book about President Duterte, his Cabinet members and other national political personalities, touching on current and burning national issues using rhetorical devices of sarcasm, irony, satire and humor.
Lawyer Frumencio “Sonny” Pulgar, a native of Calauag, Quezon, published his first book entitled Duterte’s A Joke, a 357- page book of political tirades over anything about Duterte since his assumption to the presidency in 2016.
Using his pen name Katatas Pulong, which he uses in his opinion column in several local weekly newspapers circulating in Quezon and in his blog, Pulgar writes in the Foreword of his book: “I have always intended ambitiously to write a magnum opus on History in the tradition of Teodoro Agoncillo, Nick Joaquin or Onofre D. Corpuz. But I was sidetracked by the baritone monologue of Rodrigo Roa Duterte beginning in 2015.”
The book, the first of its kind to have been written by a local provincial official in Quezon, targets the political class and various political institutions in the previous and present Duterte administration.
Pulgar, who ran under the banner of Malayang Mamamayan ng Quezon for May 2019 polls, said he filed his candidacy for governor simply to come out with his opposition to extrajudicial killing, the proposed federalism and the continued political dynasty in the country.
In the Quezon gubernatorial race, Pulgar will be up against House Minority leader and Quezon Third District Rep. Danilo E. Suarez, running under Lakas-CMD; Second District Rep. Vicente “Kulit” Alcala under PDP-Laban; Fatima Abuy of Partido Federalista ng Pilipinas; Dominador Villena and Rey Rosales, both independents.
