Gear yourself for an evening of scintillating piano music done by an international pianist, music educator and piano pedagogue—Rudolf Caesar Pelaez Golez.
Golez, presently of Cagayan de Oro, began at an early age—at four, his mother had began to teach him, showing at a young age a proficiency that would be further developed. He enrolled with Sr. Lourdes Allegado, RVM, who prepared him for his Premier Piano Recital where he played Chopin’s “Heroic Polonaise” in A-Flat Op. 53 at the Lourdes College within a year of taking formal piano lessons.
He was only 11 years old when he impressed then-First Lady Imelda Marcos at the Coconut Palace in Manila, who gave him a scholarship abroad after his performance. Whereupon, at age 13, he studied at the Juilliard School under Seymour Lipkin.
Golez made his orchestral debut when he was 17 with the Manila Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Sergio Esmilla Jr., playing Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto.
He took his undergraduate studies in Colegio de Inmaculada Concepcion in Cebu City and earned the degree of Bachelor of Music, Major in Piano in 1998. He eventually took his graduate courses in the University of the Philippines, where he graduated with the degree of Master in Music, Major in Piano Performance in 2002. Further studies brought him to Graz, Austria. He has also coached with Russsel Brandon, musicologist.
Among his notable achievements were:
- In 2004 he was the sole prize winner at the First Asean Chopin International Piano Competition.
- In 2006 he was the featured soloist at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Filipino Young Artist Series, during which he played Liszt’s B Minor Sonata.
- In 2008 he won critical acclaim with his performance with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra under the composer/conductor Cristobal Halffter of Madrid, playing De Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain.
- He represented the Philippines in concerts abroad, namely China, in 2010; Russia, in 2012; and Australia, in 2013. He also regularly performs in the US and his home country, the Philippines, with colleagues as a collaborative artist and soloist.
- He performed in a Taubman Piano Festival at Montclair University, New Jersey, in June 2015.
- He also performed at the Colburn School Zipper Hall in Los Angeles, California.
- Indeed, comments about his performances include one from Jim Lowe, Times Argus Barre, VT, thus: “deeply moving, eloquent with finesse and a deep musicality”, and another from Rosalinda Orosa of Philippine Star, thus: “refined nuances expressed through a masterful technique combined with artistic sensitivity”.
- Golez was the dean emeritus of the College of Music in 2013 and 2014, and is concurrently the Vice President for Cultural since 2005 of the Liceo de Cagayan University in Cagayan de Oro City.
- Since 2011 he has also served as faculty of Philippine Women’s University (PWU). Further, he is enrolled in the PhD Performance program of PWU under Prof. Reynaldo Reyes.
