MUNTINLUPA City has extended a P5-million scholarship fund to support the Marawi siege victims. This time, the fund seeks to help displaced pupils and students continue their studies.
In a turnover ceremony, Mayor Jaime Fresnedi handed to Marawi City Treasurer Anggay Abdullah the amount.
Fresnedi is among government officials who committed full-pledged support to the rehabilitation of the war-stricken city to enable the people to recover from their ordeal and to uplift the living condition of internally displaced persons (IDPS).
The donated amount is the initial scholarship fund that Fresnedi vowed to give annually to Marawi for five years.
The Department of Education (DepEd) said 22,000 students and 2,205 teachers were among those affected by the war in Marawi waged by the militant Maute brothers and their followers.
There were also more than 2,000 displaced students from the city accommodated by public schools in and outside of Mindanao, according to reports.
MSP Acting Head Alvin Veron said the donation will cater to around 2,000 scholars for the first batch of screening.
He added the local government unit (LGU) of Marawi crafted a counterpart ordinance on their scholarship program patterned from the Muntinlupa program.
The Marawi LGU will lead the processing of scholarship application in the city.
Prior to the educational assistance, Muntinlupa has already given P2 million for the rehabilitation of the city. Also, it has participated in the Diskwento Caravan relief mission of the Department of Trade and Industry.
Marawi Majul Usman Gandamra expressed his appreciation to Fresnedi and the city of Muntinlupa.
