Not your ordinary island haven
Boracay, named the world’s most beautiful island by Conde Nast, has recently been making headlines because of its sewer system that allegedly may cause danger to people’s health.
Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu released in January this year a list of resorts and hotels on the island that are allegedly not connected to the existing sewer system, causing President Duterte to issue a warning of a shut down of the famous white-sand destination.
Albert Ocasio, the beach property’s general manager, stated that Mövenpick Resort & Spa Boracay underwent all the necessary inspections prior to obtaining a business license, assuring that the island resort is fully compliant with local laws and regulations regarding the treatment and disposal of wastewater.
“The public sewer system does not yet extend to the part of the island where Mövenpick Resort & Spa Boracay is located. We therefore installed a dedicated sewage-treatment plant to ensure that the disposed water does not go into the ocean. All our wastewater is fully treated before being collected by the Boracay Water Co. and this process is fully compliant with local environmental laws and regulations, “ Ocasio explained.
“The health and safety of our guests and employees is of the utmost importance to us at all times. As a company deeply committed to environmental sustainability, we are ready to assist the authorities in every way possible to protect and preserve Boracay’s stunning natural assets, as we are aware of recent reports regarding the closure of certain establishments on Boracay that do not comply with environmental standards. We will continue to be fully compliant with local laws and regulations regarding the treatment and disposal of wastewater, and to help monitor the situation and act accordingly,” he added.
