ONLINE hiring in the Philippines is booming, with the services sector turning to online recruitment to fill up their roster of employees, according to Monster.com.
In a statement, Monster.com—APAC and Middle East Chief Operating Officer Abhijeet Mukherjee said this is not surprising, since the national government has identified the services sector as one of the pillars of economic growth in the country.
Based on the Monster Employment Index (MEI), online recruitment in the Philippines grew 25 percent, with all industries seeing an increase in online hiring activity except for education.
“The Philippines has always counted on the services sector as one of the strongest and fastest-growing pillars of its economic growth. Government estimates showed the share of the service sector in the country’s gross value-added contribution has been increasing over time, nearly touching 60 percent last year,” Mukherjee said.
“With the government making efforts toward boosting tourism and attracting investments in human resources development, research and development, finance and infrastructure, there is bound to be an uptrend in hiring, especially for related professions,” he added.
Data showed that 11 out of 12 industries saw double-digit year-on-year growth, with health care leading the way with a 41-percent rise from October, up eight points from September’s 33-percent YoY growth. This was closely followed by the retail industry, which posted a 39-percent growth YoY. Monster.com noted the local retail sector has been witnessing strong growth in online recruitment since August 2017.
Data also showed that other industries such as banking, financial services and insurance, IT/telecom and advertising also saw notable growth numbers of 26 percent, 23 percent and 22 percent YoY, respectively.
“The only industry in the Philippines to record a decline last month was education with an 8-percent drop between October 2017 and 2018,” Monster.com said.
The MEI also monitors which jobs were in demand in terms of online recruitment. Data showed there was a double-digit growth in demand for all occupations in October.
The occupation that posted the highest growth was in the purchase, logistics, supply chain profession with a 47-percent YoY growth followed by finance and accounts with 39 percent.
Monster.com also said professionals in service-based occupations such as health care, hospitality, and travel and customer service also witnessed notable growth in demand with growth numbers of 36 percent, 19 percent and 10 percent, respectively, between October 2017 and 2018.
The MEI is a monthly gauge of online job posting activity, based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from a large representative selection of career web sites and online job listings across the Philippines.
The Index does not reflect the trend of any one advertiser or source, but is an aggregate measure of the change in job listings across the industry.
