FIDE Master John Marvin Miciano targets a Grandmaster norm when he competes with Woman GM Janelle Frayna in the European Tour in July.
The 17-year-old Miciano exceeded expectations when he instantly broke free from outside the top 50 national rankings to 11th overall after a series of impressive outings.
The Far Eastern University player accumulated 171.08 points to hike his 2260 rating to 2431 courtesy of his victory in the Asian Youth Open Under-18 Standard event in Chang Mai, Thailand, and a seventh-place performance in the 18th Bangkok Open.
The twin performances gave Miciano the points to leap in the national rankings. More important, his performance made him a potential candidate for a GM title.
“That’s my dream [GM title],” Miciano said.
GM Jayson Gonzales, who coaches Miciano, said that breaching the 2500 mark is just a stone’s throw away.
“The GM title is the main goal, but we also want Marvin to gain rating points and get to the 2500 rating mark,” Gonzales said.
Miciano also aims to become an International Master before they leave for Europe.
