TO make their vacation worthwhile, the city of Manila is hiring 1,000 college and high-school students for 20-day summer jobs, starting on May 2.
Mayor Joseph E. Estrada lauded the students during the orientation and opening ceremony of the Special Program for Employment of Students 2018 (Spes) held recently at the San Andres Sports Complex in Malate.
This initiative allows students, ages 14 to 24, to work in different city departments, depending on what they are studying.
Fifty percent of their salaries will come from the Department of Labor and Employment and the other half from the Manila City Hall.
Thousands of students from different public schools in Manila applied for the program, from which only those who are deemed “special” qualified.
Apart from giving them the opportunity to work, this program will enable them to experience first-hand how the different city departments work, Estrada said.
He noted the summer jobs will give them the chance to contribute to the city’s progress, since future leaders will come from the youth sector.
“What I want you to understand while working is the value of unity,” Estrada said in Filipino, citing that working for the common purpose of progress and development in Manila brings people together.
The mayor advised the students to do their best and cooperate with those they work with and learn from their experience.
“Make this as your guide and inspiration for your future plans in life,” he said.
Spes 2018 is under the supervision of the locality’s Youth Development and Welfare Bureau, in coordination with Public Employment Service Office, Estrada said.
