THE national women’s rugby team—Lady Volcanoes—impressed by bagging the silver medal in the 2018 Asia Trophy Series in Brunei Darussalam over the weekend.
The Lady Volcanoes won five straight games but fell short in the gold-medal match against Malaysia, 7-10, in the tournament that included teams from Uzbekistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal in Pool B and Indonesia, Malaysia, Guam, Brunei and Lao PDR in Pool B.
Backed by First Pacific and MVP Sports Foundation, the Lady Volcanoes opened their campaign with a 12-10 win over Uzbekistan, 38-0, against Pakistan and 17-10 opposite India. The Philippines handed Nepal a 43-0 loss to top Pool B unscathed.
The Lady Volcanoes progressed to the semifinals and beat Guam, 10-7, to arrange the championship match with Malaysia, who limped with a loss to Guam in Pool B.
The final was tightly contested with the Malaysians getting the upper hand at 5-0. The Lady Volcanoes made it 7-5 but ran out of time to yield the gold medal.
“It was a fantastic weekend for women’s rugby in Asia to see 10 teams represented in this tournament—the most we’ve ever had competing for the trophy,” Lady Volcanoes Head Coach Ada Milby.
The U-18 national team, meanwhile, will fly to India on Wednesday to compete in the U-18s Asia Sevens Championships this weekend in Bhubaneswar.
