NATIONAL player Jack Danielle Animam and newcomer Kaye Pingol showed the way with 12 points as defending champion National University (NU) beat University of Santo Tomas (UST), 87-68, to retain the women’s crown of the 24th Fr. Martin Cup Summer Basketball Tournament over the weekend at the Saint Placid Gym at San Beda-Manila.
Rookie Jeanne Camelo, a prized find from Chiang Kai Shek College, had nine points she highlighted with three triples to share the spotlight in the title-clinching win.
It was the third Fr. Martin Cup crown for the Lady Bulldogs, who went 8-1 won-lost in the tournament supported by Cocolife.
“I’m happy that we won again. For the girls, this is a learning experience, especially for the new ones in the group,” Lady Bulldogs Coach Patrick Aquino said.
The Lady Bulldogs took control early with Camelo unloading two treys in the first five minutes to help the Lady Bulldogs to a 15-8 advantage.
With Annick Fabienne Edimo Tiky controlling the boards, the Lady Bulldogs posted a 38-29 advantage at the half.
Grace Irebu led the Tigresses with 16 points.
Nico Abatayo, meanwhile, scored 11 points and Anthony Sistoza had nine as NU downed Our Lady of Fatima University, 72-62, in a men’s contest.
Adama Diakhite hit 23 points as defending champion Diliman College scored a 72-65 triumph over University of the East for a 3-0 record also in the men’s division.
Adam Doria made 13 points for Adamson University, which downed Hope Christian School, 85-71, in juniors action.
