SARAH GERONIMO’S life story is inspiring.
She used to be one of those wide-eyed dreamers who wanted to make it big in the entertainment industry. Today she is a certified hitmaker and a box-office star.
Her life story is an open book to the public. She started joining amateur singing contests around Metro Manila when she was a young girl. In 2003 she joined GMA’s Star For a Night and won the grand prize. Since then, there has been no turning back for Sarah. She hit the right notes, and conquered the music industry. Acting came knocking, and she starred in a number of TV shows and films—the most notable of which were her pairings with John Lloyd Cruz that went on to become among the top blockbuster Pinoy films of all time.
Sarah has been in the industry for a remarkable 12 years. She started at the same time director Richard Linklater began work on his Oscar-nominated film Boyhood. Many people wouldn’t even last 12 minutes in the industry but, with talent and determination, Sarah is still here.
And it seems that there is no stopping her. Doors of opportunities still open for Sarah. She recently did a Disney project and was just introduced as the face of the cosmetics brand San San.
At the recent press launch, Sarah encouraged her fans to use this brand of makeup, but to not go over the top in doing their faces. She advised them to just highlight their features and maintain a casual yet fresh look. That’s what she does for herself because, besides making her feel more comfortable, it’s one way to make her remain true to herself.
While I’m definitely more than 12 years older than Sarah (maybe with the help of San San we can look like the same age?), I think I can learn something from this young diva. No matter what industry you’re in, whether you’re a singer who can fill up arenas like Sarah, or a singer who does arias only in the privacy of your bathroom like me, we have to remain grounded and true to ourselves.
Perhaps, Graham Moore, 2015 Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Imitation Game, said it best in his acceptance speech: “I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she doesn’t fit in anywhere. You do. Stay weird. Stay different, and then when it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage, please pass the same message along.”
