KALIBO, Aklan—The Sangguniang Bayan of Kalibo is currently drafting a legislation that enhances its plastic ordinance.
Kalibo Councilor Cynthia de la Cruz, chairman of the committee on environment, said the proposed ordinance for the regulated use of plastic and Styrofoam in Kalibo aims to help reduce plastic waste.
“I thanked the groceries, malls and market vendors, including the Department of Education, for their support to our proposed [enhanced] ordinance on the regulated use of plastics and Styrofoams,” said de la Cruz.
Under the proposed new ordinance, food chains will be required to use paper box and the like as an alternative to Styrofoam. Consumers are encouraged to bring their own container when buying food for takeout.
Use of Styrofoam for dine-in orders will also be prohibited. Business establishments, restaurants, fast-food chains and other related enterprises could instead use alternatives, such as dining plates, utensils and glass.
Consumers at the Kalibo Public Market will also soon be required to bring their own bags.
