KALIBO, Aklan—Kalibo Councilor Cynthia de la Cruz is pushing for the protection of children in traffic.
De la Cruz said on Tuesday night that she is filing an ordinance for the local version of Children’s Safety on Motorcycle Act of 2015.
Under the law, it is illegal to operate a two-wheeled motorcycle on national roads if a child is on board, specifically if there’s traffic, there’s a high density of fast-moving vehicles, or where there’s a speed limit of more than 60 kilomters per hour is imposed.
The exception is if the child’s feet can comfortably reach the motorcycle’s foot peg for the cushion or the child’s arms can reach around and grasp the waist of the motorcycle rider. The child should also wear a standard protective helmet.
Another exception is if the child being transported requires immediate medical attention.
“The law only refers to the implementation in the national highway. My local version would be inclusion of all the municipal and barangay roads in the town,” de la Cruz said.
She said for several months already, motorcycle accidents had been prevalent in Kalibo, thus, prompting de la Cruz to file such measure.
