SAN Miguel Corp. Sports Director Alfrancis Chua aired his willingness to help University of Santo Tomas’s (UST) waning program.
This after the Growling Tigers finished in the cellar of the recent Season University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s basketball tournament.
Boy Sablan was axed as UST head coach after two dismal seasons, and in his wake emerged potential replacements that included former players Bal David and Pido Jarencio, and even De La Salle Head Coach Aldin Ayo. Chua, a former UST player and currently team manager of Barangay Ginebra in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), is also rumored to be a potential candidate. But he maintained all are plain rumors.
“Me? Coaching again? Here in the [PBA] I have no intention of coaching anymore, what more in the UAAP,” Chua told the reporters on Wednesday after the annual PBA news conference for the coming season. “For sure, I’m not going to coach UST.”
But Chua said he wanted to help UST in another form, specifically in terms of the school’s recruitment program. “I’m willing to help, in any way I can. If they need my help, why not?” he said.
Chua added San Miguel Corp. has offered to help UST last season, but negotiations didn’t push through. “It was cancelled. They appointed a new coach that time so the talks were stopped,” he said.
