WITH eSports in the Philippines expected to further grow from $354.2 million (P18.926 billion) this year, Globe Telecom Inc. is “going full throttle” to build its portfolio and harness the potential of the industry.
Jake San Diego, head of Games for Globe, said the company is keen on tapping the commercial potential of eSports and video games in the Philippines through the development of its mobile network.
“We will build the ecosystem needed to boost the commercial potential of eSports and games in the country,” he said.
Globe has integrated eSports and video games into its existing mobile-data products. Such an initiative led to a 39-percent contribution to Globe’s mobile-data traffic, which reached 390 petabytes for the first half of 2018.
Including video games and entertainment content, the company’s total mobile-data revenue reached P25.6 billion for the first half of 2018, which is 26 percent higher versus the same period last year.
Spending in e-games reached $354.2 million in 2017, after the number of gamers reached 29.9 million, data from intelligence firm New Zoo showed.
Last year Globe signed partnership deals with League of Legends developer, Riot; Garena, the publisher of Arena of Valor and Philippine publisher of League of Legends; and eSports events organizer, Mineski.
The deals provided eSports fans and gamers new events, including tournament formats and video game promotions exclusive only to Globe users.
