FORMER Customs chief Nicanor E. Faeldon has yet to assume his post as head of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) despite President Duterte’s announcement of his appointment.
This was confirmed by Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra, adding that BuCor Deputy Director General Melvin Ramon Buenafe has been designated as officer in charge of the agency until Faeldon reports for duty.
“Mr. Faeldon has not assumed office as of today. I will confer with him as soon as he accepts the job and reports for work,” Guevarra said in a text message sent to reporters.
Guevarra acknowledged that Faeldon may still beg off from assuming the post as he is currently serving as deputy administrator for operations of the Office of Civil Defense.
The BuCor is an agency under the supervision of the Department of Justice (DOJ).
President Duterte earlier announced that he has chosen Faeldon to replace Philippine National Police chief Director General Roanld M. dela Rosa following the latter’s resignation and run a Senate slot in next year’s midterm elections.
Faeldon, 53, was a former captain in the Philippine Marines when he participated in a mutiny against the Arroyo administration in 2003.
Duterte appointed Faeldon as head of the Bureau of Customs after winning the elections but was forced to resign from his post last year after his name was dragged into the P6.4-billion shabu shipment from China that managed to slip past the agency.
