MALACAÑANG last Saturday reminded businessmen to pay their taxes right and on time, saying the Duterte administration will not hesitate to try them in court should they opt to run away from paying their dues.
The statement came after Mighty Corp., the second-largest cigarette manufacturer in the Philippines, entered into a P40-billion compromise settlement with the government regarding its tax liability. The Wongchuking-owned enterprise was accused by the government of using fake tax stamps.
According to Presidential Spokesman Ernesto C. Abella, the settlement will significantly bolster the government’s infrastructure blitz. “This landmark tax settlement is the largest in Philippine history; and will go a long way in funding the Duterte administration’s infrastructure program,”Abella said.
“Unpaid taxes result in less government revenues and stall the delivery of quality government services,” he added.
Abella also urged businessmen to pay their taxes right and on time, saying Duterte will not go easy on those who will try to manipulate their way around the law.
“The President will be relentless in his campaign against corruption and delinquent taxpayers, haling violators to court, if necessary. As citizens cooperate, we build a comfortable life for all. Strong political will to benefit all, and not just a few, should be the trademark of the entire government,” Abella said.
Aside from Mighty Corp., the government was able to force Philippine Airlines (PAL) to pay its fees to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap) and the Manila International Airport Authority (Miaa). PAL last Friday committed to settle its P6-billion payable to the Caap and the Miaa.
“One of the overriding reasons PAL agreed to settle is to manifest its trust and confidence in President Duterte’s administration,” PAL said in a joint statement with the Department of Transportation.
The settlement came after the President told PAL to pay its debts to the government, or else he will have to shut down the Ninoy Aquino Internation Airport Terminal 2. PAL exclusively uses the terminal for its domestic and international flights.
